Homecoming Weekend Draws Alumni, Parents, and Friends

Machias, ME - September 26 – 28 was Homecoming weekend on the University of Maine at Machias campus. Despite rain, fog, and chilly temperatures, many alumni, parents, students, faculty and staff turned out for the annual weekend of events. Due to the weather conditions some events had to be cancelled, but many of the festivities went on as planned.

Friday night’s festivities included a bonfire and pep rally with the judging of U Maine Machias’ official fight song competition. The winner of the fight song competition was Ryan Meader. Also crowned were this year’s Homecoming King and Queen, Mike Oram and Jess Reed.

Saturday started off with the dedication of the Douglas Strout Student Lounge in Torrey Hall. “Dougie”, a Machiasport resident, was a junior at UMM when he lost a heroic battle with cancer in December 2007. A plaque commemorating Dougie’s life appears next to the entrance of the new Student Lounge. Offering words of sympathy and celebration to the crowd that gathered were UMM President Cynthia Huggins, Kim Page (Director of Student Life), Jo-Ellen Scribner (Administrative Assistant), Shelby Ross (representative from the class of 2008), and Cody Jouret (President of UMM’s Student Senate).

With the unveiling of the plaque, Ross and Jouret cut the ribbon and welcomed the crowd in to view the new Student Lounge. In attendance were Dougie’s parents Emery and Sharon Strout, brother Clifford Strout, and many other family and friends.

Both the Men’s and Women’s soccer teams fought hard against the University of Maine at Fort Kent Bengals in Saturday’s double-header. The volleyball team also lost a tough match against Unity College.

Other events on Saturday included a picnic in Kilburn Commons, Chemistry Magic with chemistry professors Shallee Page and William Otto, the Clipper Luau in Kilburn Commons, the Nathan Turk Memorial Alumni Basketball Games, and the Green and White Ball.

Alumni soccer games on Sunday wrapped up this year’s Homecoming festivities.

We hope to see you at Homecoming 2009!
