The Binnacle accepts submissions from the students, faculty, and staff of the University of Maine at Machias and from writers and artists anywhere in the world. We publish works of fiction and poetry.
From December 1 to March 15 each year, The Binnacle will accept submissions for its Annual International Ultra-Short Competition (the Fall edition). All submissions are to be no longer than 150 words (not including the title). Poetry entries should be no longer than sixteen lines. All works should have a narrative element. A minimum total of $300 in prizes will be awarded each year. Winners and honorees will be notified early in June. All submissions should be e-mailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
From September 1 to November 30, The Binnacle will accept submissions for its Spring edition. Fiction should be 2500 words or fewer and poetry should be short enough so as not to lose the readers' interest. Writers may submit up to five poems and two works of fiction. Beginning in Spring 2014, prize money will be awarded to the top entries for each Spring edition. Writers selected for the Spring edition will be notified in mid-January. All submissions should be e-mailed to email@example.com.
After September 1, 2013, works submitted out of season will not be considered. Due to the heavy volume of submissions, we will not respond to queries about the state of writers' submissions. Such information can be obtained by visiting our website or following us on Facebook.
Works should be submitted via attachments, which should be in a simple text format (.txt), rich text format (.rtf), Open Office document (.odt), or as a Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx). As we have asked for no paper submissions for over five years, submissions made via post, with the exceptions of those from military personnel and prisoners, will not be considered or returned.
Creative non-fiction and imagery are no longer accepted.
All submissions should be double spaced, with one-inch margins in a twelve-point standard font such as Times New Roman. Poetry submissions should be formatted as the poet desires them to be formatted in print, should they be accepted. Please include your full name, phone, e-mail address, title of submission, and (for prose pieces) word count.
The Binnacle holds one-time print rights and e-book rights, one-time audio rights, and short-term web-site rights for all accepted submissions. We also maintain the right to re-print accepted pieces on promotional materials. Denied submissions will not be used at a later date. All digital printings will be equally protected by the same copyright as paper publications.
We understand that a guideline page such as this can not address all of the issues that writers might have, so we invite writers to e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call us at 207-255-1247.
