Ted Ames of Stonington will present “Exploring Why Atlantic Cod Have Not Recovered.”

“My talk will be about the ecological linkage between cod and prey species such as alewives and Atlantic herring, based on recent trawl survey data and fishermen's ecological knowledge,” Ames said. “Combining the two datasets with historical information suggests alewives were a critical factor affecting the loss and the potential recovery of coastal cod spawning groups in Maine.”

Ames is a senior advisor of Penobscot East Resource Center, an external Graduate Faculty Member at University of Maine, Orono, research associate at Bowdoin College, and member of the Marine Fisheries Advisory Council of NOAA.  He fished commercially for 28 years and has authored several peer-reviewed articles on historical fisheries ecology, fishermen’s ecological knowledge, and related subjects. He holds an MS in Biochemistry from the University of Maine. Ames is the recipient of an honorary PhD from UMM in 2015, a 2005 MacArthur Award, the 2007 Geddes W. Simpson Distinguished Lecturer at the University of Maine, and was Bowdoin’s 2010-11 visiting Coastal Studies Scholar.

The lecture is sponsored by the Eastern Maine Conservation Initiative and UMM and it is free and open to the public.
