An opening celebration for the new public outdoor ice skating rink is planned for 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 1. The rink is located on the UMM soccer field. The opening celebration will feature free skating, skating lessons, and outdoor games. Even individuals without ice skates are encouraged to come and take part in the fun. A Preview Day for prospective students and their families is planned for Friday, March 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the University of Maine at Machias. During the open house event, students will have the opportunity to take a campus tour, attend an activities fair, hear from a student panel, eat lunch at the dining commons, and meet with admissions counselors, faculty, and athletic coaches. Several information sessions are also planned for students and parents on such topics as applying to UMM and financial aid. Prospective students of all ages and educational backgrounds are welcome to attend. The University has a second spring Preview Day planned for Friday, April 20. Ice Fishing Derbyon Hadley Lake, East Machias Sunday, March 4, from 6 a.m. - 1 p.m. Entry Fee: $5 per person Participants must have their own traps, bait, and a Maine state fishing license. $25 Cabelas gift card and cash prize will be awarded to the person with the heaviest fish! Join us for an opening reception for local artists Susan Hammond and Donna Kausen from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 9 at the UMM Art Galleries. "On My Cayuse" will feature oil paintings by Susan Hammond. "Trees" will feature wooden sculptures by Donna Kausen. The exhibits will be on display for the month of March. The UMM Art Galleries, located on the first floor of Powers Hall, are open weekday afternoons from 1 to 5 p.m. or by appointment. Students at the University of Maine at Machias are planning an Out of the Darkness Community Walk for Saturday, March 10 to raise awareness for suicide prevention. The walk begins at 9 a.m. at the Reynolds Center Gymnasium. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. |

Caregivers Conference: For Those Who Care for the Ones They LovePlease note: Registration for this conference is closed. Providing resources and expert advice to family caregivers will be the focus of a free one-day conference scheduled for March 30 at the University of Maine at Machias. The event, which is open to caregivers and their families, begins at 8 a.m. on Friday, March 30 and is being coordinated by UMM’s Office of Community Services.
