Deadline Nears for UMM’s Annual Ultra-Short Writing Competition
MACHIAS, Maine – The Binnacle, the literary magazine of the University of Maine at Machias, is sponsoring its Tenth Annual Ultra-Short Competition, open to writers in Washington County and around the globe. Interested writers of short narrative under 150 words and poetry of sixteen lines or fewer are welcome to submit their works.
Prizes will be awarded in May for both categories, with the total of prizes amounting to no less than $300. The top fifty-two entries will be included in the contest edition. Writers should submit their works by e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org by March 15, 2013.
The tenth edition is already off to a great start. According to The Binnacle advisor, Professor of English Gerard NeCastro, submissions have come from seventeen states, ten countries, and six continents, as well as the students on campus. Last year, there were more than 900 submissions.
The ninth edition, published in late December, featured prize winners Erik Svehaug (Poetry), Cynthia Tracy Larsen (General Fiction), Lisa Ricard Claro (Humor), and UMM student winner Jordan Gilletti.
The Ultra-Short Competition draws all sorts of writers, says NeCastro, from writers with hundreds of publications to elementary school students.
