Bill Cassidy and Howard McFadden to Receive Awards at Commencement
Alumni to be honored for their service to Washington County
MACHIAS, ME – Two Washington County leaders and University of Maine at Machias alumni will be honored at the University’s 99th commencement on Saturday, May 15. Bill Cassidy, president emeritus of Washington County Community College, will receive the Distinguished Achievement Award and the President’s Award, and State Representative Howard McFadden will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award. Both recipients are being honored for their service to Washington County and the State of Maine.
Cassidy, a native of Calais, received a bachelor’s degree from UMM in 1975. He went on to earn his master’s degree from Husson College, a certificate of advanced study from the University of Maine, and an Ed.D. from Nova Southeastern University.
Cassidy taught in the Calais School System and at Washington County Vocational and Technical Institute prior to becoming director of the Regional Technical Center in Waterville. He also served as associate commissioner of Vocational and Adult Education for the State of Maine, Director of Student Life at York County Community College, and director of statewide programs at the Center for Career Development, a division of the Maine Community College System. Cassidy became the president of Washington County Community College in 2003, and retired in January 2010 as president emeritus.
Rep. McFadden, a resident of Dennysville, was honorably discharged from the United States Army after serving from 1957–1959 and again from 1961–1963. He is a recipient of the U.S. Army’s Good Conduct Medal. A 1967 graduate of UMM, McFadden received his master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Maine in 1989.
Rep. McFadden is a retired educator, having served more than 35 years as a junior high teacher and elementary school principal. He is currently a member of the Maine House of Representatives, representing District 30, and serves on the Joint Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs. He is also a member of the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame, the Lubec Lions Club, the Dennysville-Edmunds Congregational Church, and serves on the Dennysville School Committee.
