Maine's Woods: Observations by Bert Lincoln Call and Henry David Thoreau to open Nov. 10

The Angler by Bert Lincoln CallMACHIAS, Maine – The Art Galleries at the University of Maine at Machias will feature the traveling exhibit Maine’s Woods: Observations by Bert Lincoln Call and Henry David Thoreau from November 10 through December 17. An opening reception will be held from 5–7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 10.

The exhibit, presented by the Dexter Historical Society, consists of 35 photographs taken by Dexter photographer Bert Lincoln Call in the 1800s accompanied by quotes from Henry David Thoreau’s The Maine Woods. The traveling show is being offered for display free of charge to galleries, educational institutions, and local exhibit halls throughout Maine.

Taken only 35 years after Thoreau visited, Call's images provide a photographic record of the woods of northern Maine and capture the specific places Thoreau described in his book. The photographs are the result of many lengthy excursions by Call, who had a passion for the woods, lakes, and rivers of northern Maine.

The UMM Art Galleries, located on the first floor of Powers Hall, are open weekday afternoons or by appointment. For more information, please contact Art Gallery Director Bernie Vinzani at (207) 255-1279. For additional information on the Maine’s Woods exhibit, please visit
