3 Concert Bands Combining for a Free Mega-Concert at UMM on April 3rd

The highly regarded UMaine Orono Symphonic Band under the direction of Professor Christopher White will be touring Washington County and are eager to showcase their efforts in a free concert Wednesday April 3rd at 7:00 at the UMM Performing Arts Center.  The group will be performing a variety of music, including the very popular Concerto for Electric Guitar and a wonderful mix of other traditional and newly composed music.  The auditioned group is made up of a majority of majors from UMaine's Fine Arts Program and features a well polished group of young men and women. Jonesboro's own Chris Plaisted is among one of the many talented members of this prestigious ensemble.

The UMaine Band will be joined by the UMM Town Band (led by Gene Nichols) and the students from Rose M. Gaffney and Machias Memorial High School's Grades 7-12 Band (led by Bonnie Atkinson) for a mega-finale to the show.  Any and all are welcome for this great musical start to Spring!  For more information, please call Mrs. Atkinson at the Rose M. Student Senate will be holding a debate between the vice presidential and presidential candidates for next years student Senate. It will be held in Science 102 on Tuesday April 9th, from 6pm to 9:30pm.

MACHIAS, Maine – Chris Crittenden, poet and instructor of ethics, will read from his new book, Jugularity, at the University of Maine at Machias on Tuesday, April 9. The reading will take place in the Book Arts Studio at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Jugularity, Crittenden’s first full-length collection, was recently published with Stonesthrow Press. Author Robin Stratton writes in a review, “Sometimes when I review a great book, my instinct is to judiciously quote the particularly delicious lines. But I am not going to do that with Jugularity because there are too many and it would take too long.”

Crittenden has published poetry in a wide array of journals, from Istanbul to Ottawa. Some of the best-known are The Portland Review, Atlanta Review, American Poetry Review, and Chelsea. He was the winner of the first ever Medulla Publishing Chapbook Competition and is a teaching artist at the online Rooster Moans Poetry Cooperative, a provider of online poetry workshops.

The reading is part of the ongoing Maine Writers Series at UMM, which features poetry, fiction, and nonfiction readings by Maine writers.

MACHIAS, Maine – The University of Maine at Machias will show the documentary film “In the Blood” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 12 in the Performing Arts Center.

Produced by Wiscasset resident Sumner McKane, “In the Blood” combines rare video and photographs from the turn of the 20th century to tell the story of Maine’s lumber industry. The film will be presented as a docu-exhibit, blending film, still photos, and a live score performed by McKane.

“The material that I have discovered has gone unseen or heard for years,” says McKane. “The visuals are awe inspiring and stunning. The oral histories, the tales, stories, and interviews - told by the men themselves - are honest and raw, and invoke emotion and disbelief.”

Tickets are $10 for singles, $15 for couples, and free for UMM students with a valid Clipper Card. Tickets will be sold at the door.

The showing of “In the Blood” at UMM is part of the Libra Series, and is made possible through funding from the Libra Foundation, a Portland-based philanthropic organization founded in 1989 by the late Elizabeth P. Noyce.

MACHIAS, Maine – More than 100 youth and their supporters are expected to attend the 6th Annual Rainbow Ball Weekend, held April 19–21 at the University of Maine at Machias. The weekend of events will include educational workshops, a highlighter party, a talent show hosted by drag queens, an admissions campus preview, and the Rainbow Ball prom.

The Rainbow Ball is an open and affirming chem-free prom evening that includes dancing, pictures, food, and friends. It is offered as an alternative prom for youth who may be gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and their allies. All associated high school and college students, youth groups, and community members, including allied support groups, are invited to attend the casual, fun, safe, supervised, and friendly community celebration.

This year’s Rainbow Ball has a “Mythical Creatures in an Enchanted Forest” theme. Professional photographer and UMM graduate Jen Reynolds will take prom pictures (covered in the price of the tickets). Dress can be formal, fabulous, or casual.

Voluntary support groups will be offered throughout the weekend for a wide variety of orientations and identities (including allies), as well as several educational workshops on topics such as activism, Safe Space training for young people and educators, healthy relationships, and more.

The prom and associated events have been made possible by financial assistance from the Catawamteak Foundation and the University of Maine System Diversity Committee. UMM’s 100% Society, a student club, coordinates and plans all of the weekend’s activities. Co-sponsors of the event include UMM’s Admissions Office, Diversity Committee, Omicron Delta Pi fraternity, Residence Life, Student Activities, the Office of the President, and Machias PFLAG.

The Rainbow Ball is free to high school youth and chaperones and is being held at the Pellon Center in Machias. Ticket prices for others are $15 for one and $20 for two. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance at the First Stop in Powers Hall. All ticket proceeds and donations will be used to support next year’s Rainbow Ball.

Organizers of the weekend’s events hope to increase public awareness of how inclusiveness can be incorporated around adolescent rites of passage, such as the prom. Students at the Rainbow Ball will have the opportunity to celebrate and be with their friends in a supportive environment at this important social event.

MACHIAS, Maine – Local actor/director Scott Sortman, a 2004 graduate of the University of Maine at Machias, will bring Austin Pendleton’s play Uncle Bob to UMM on April 26 and 27.

Uncle Bob (Sortman) lives in New York as an uproariously articulate hermit, separated from the wife to whom he is devoted – and who is devoted to him. He is visited by his nephew, Josh (UMM student Ryan French), who is without a job, without a completed college education, and without any sense of a future, all of which he faces with a wit and nervy desperation that finds its only match in his Uncle Bob. Uncle Bob has AIDS, and Josh has hitch-hiked from the Midwest, uninvited (profoundly uninvited), to take care of him. A loving and funny, abrasive and profane face-off ensues.

The New Yorker called Uncle Bob “Intense … very funny … riveting.”

Author Austin Pendleton has been called “The most famous actor no one has ever heard of.” He has worked in the New York theatre and in films for over 50 years, with such luminaries as Meryl Streep, Zero Mostel, Frank Langella, Jerome Robbins, Lillian Hellman, Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, Elizabeth Taylor, and Orson Welles, as actor, director, and playwright. He has also spent much of his life teaching others, including Scott Sortman.

Uncle Bob tells a story of love and death in language and subject material which does not compromise. This play deals with sensitive issues and includes language or content that some may find objectionable. Unaccompanied minors under age 18 will not be admitted.

The East River Challenge canoe race will be held Saturday, April 27. Registration takes place at 10 a.m. at Palmer's Landing on Hadley's Lake. Participation fee is $12 per person. An awards ceremony will follow the race at Mill Park in East Machias.

The race is a project of the UMM Environmental Recreation and Tourism Management program.

Machias Valley Run - Sunday, April 28, 2013

MACHIAS, Maine – Students in the Environmental Recreation and Tourism Management program at the University of Maine at Machias have been busy planning the second annual Machias Valley Run, which includes several road races for adults and youth. The event, to be held Sunday, April 28, will feature a half marathon, 5k, and one-mile fun run.

The half marathon will start at 9:30 a.m. and the 5k and one miler will begin at 10 a.m. All races start at Roque Bluffs State Park.

Registration for the races will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the park. Registration fees are $15 for the half marathon, $10 for the 5k, and $2 for the one-mile race.

In addition to the top finishers, prizes will be awarded to the school whose participants accumulate the most mileage in the half marathon and 5k races, and the business that enters the most participants in the 5k and half marathon races.

Join UMM student Joshua Luman for the opening of his senior show, "Savage Love," at 5 p.m. on Monday, April 29 in the UMM Art Gallery, located on the first floor of Powers Hall.

Luman's show combines photography, music, painting, ceramics, metalwork, woodwork, and hand-made paper to provide an immersive, multisensory experience.

The installation will be on display through May 11.

Join UMM student Alexandra Coleman for the opening of her senior art show on Tuesday, April 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the UMM Art Gallery, located on the first floor of Powers Hall.

Coleman's exhibit is a combination of charcoal on paper and photography, focused around the human form, emotions, and feelings.

The exhibit will be on display through May 11.
