Honors Convocation at 11:30 a.m. in the Performing Arts Center

MACHIAS, Maine – Local youth and community members will have the opportunity to discover the rich natural resources, mountain chains, rivers, and oceans of the European continent when a larger-than-life map of Europe rolls into Machias on May 1.

Part of the National Geographic Giant Traveling Maps Program, the 26-foot by 26-foot map of Europe will be rolled out at the Reynolds Center Gymnasium on the University of Maine at Machias campus from 1 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1.

National Geographic Giant Traveling Maps tour the nation’s schools to bring hands- and feet-on geography education to youth. The giant map of Europe will teach students the power of maps and the limitless depth of geography through interactive games, incorporating physical movement to teach students place names, physical geography, and cultural geography as well as map reading skills. They will explore the iconic castles, towers, and archaeological sites of Europe, and learn how scientific discoveries, technological breakthroughs, plagues, and wars have shaped European life over centuries.

Susan Lahti from the Maine Geographic Alliance will be on hand to lead activities for youth in grades K-8, with students and staff from UMM’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Service Center providing assistance.

The event is free and open to the public. School classes from preschool to eighth grade, clubs, home school groups, and others may arrange a time to visit the map together for a 45-minute activities session by contacting Jenny Robish at jennifer.robish@maine.edu or 255-1214.

A Zumbathon will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 3 in the Reynolds Center Gymnasium. Proceeds from the event will go to the Next Step Domestic Violence Project. Admission is by donation (suggested $5-10) and non-perishable items will also be collected. The event is the senior project of UMM students Danielle Wormell and Dana Houghton.

The Play Production class will present an evening of readers' theatre, including works by O. Henry, Thornton Wilder, Mark Twain, and Monty Python, on Friday, May 3 at 7 p.m. in the Portside room of Kimball Hall. For more information, contact Gene Nichols at 255-1229.

Students will showcase their research and service work during the annual Celebrate UMM Day, Thursday, May 9, 2013. The event will take place 3:30 to 5 p.m. on the second floor of Torrey Hall.

The event will feature presentations, posters, and displays prepared by various student organizations and classes that highlight the work students have done during the academic year. Featured projects will emphasize outstanding undergraduate scholarship and volunteerism, as well as the coupling of classroom learning with community service. The University will also recognize individuals whose service activities over the past year have been particularly notable.

The University of Maine at Machias will rename its maintenance and support facility during a dedication ceremony on Friday, May 17, at 11 a.m. The Crandlemire Support Building will be named in memory of the late Donald Crandlemire, UMM’s first director of physical plant.

Crandlemire served as director of physical plant from 1973 to 1996, during a period of significant expansion of campus facilities. During his 23-year career at UMM, Crandlemire oversaw construction of the facility that now bears his name, as well as the Science Building, and the transformation of the old gymnasium in Powers Hall into the 364-seat Performing Arts Center.

Crandlemire passed away in August 2012.

Members of the campus and community are invited to attend the 11 a.m. dedication ceremony. A reception will follow.

The 102nd Commencement of the University of Maine at Machias will take place at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 18 at the Frederic A. Reynolds Center. For more information, visit: www.machias.edu/commencement.
