SUBJECT: Curriculum Committee


The Curriculum Committee is responsible for developing recommendations for action by faculty and thence by the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the President.

The areas of committee responsibility and recommendation are as follows:

Adding, dropping, or major restructuring of academic programs, concentrations and minors. This includes but is not limited to Curriculum Committee involvement during –

a. Intent Plan any new program as well as during final program proposal

b. Discussion phase for elimination of any degree program

c. Implementation process of Program Review recommendations (done after Program Review has been accepted by Administration and forwarded to UM System Office)

 Adding, dropping, or major restructuring of courses. This includes but is not limited to –

a. new course proposal for five-year file

b. courses to be dropped from five-year file

c. change in credit value of courses

d. change in content of course offering

e. changes in courses which impact expectations of other Divisions/degree programs requiring course in question

Issues that have the potential for major institution-wide impact should be routed by the Curriculum Committee to the Program Review and Evaluation Committee for additional review and recommendation before being forwarded to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

 

PROCESS FOR CURRICULUM CHANGE:
All curricular decisions are announced by the Curriculum Committee to the faculty and sent to the Vice President for Academic Affairs for recommendation to the President except follows:

Within seven (7) days of announcing its curricular decision and making the relevant documents available to faculty, seven (7) faculty members request consideration by the entire faculty:

The Vice President for Academic Affairs of President requests review by the entire faculty;

The Committee votes to bring business forward to the Faculty Meeting.

Committee action that runs counter to the requested action should not be sent back to the person/group who requested the action nor forwarded to faculty or administration; instead, the committee and the author of the request should confer about an appropriate course of action.

In the event that the Curriculum Committee and the proposer of a course are unable to agree on an appropriate course of action, the proposal will automatically be forwarded by the Curriculum Committee for full faculty review.

 

ONE-TIME ONLY COURSES:
One time only courses proceed directly from the recommending Division to the Vice President for Academic Affairs for final approval. If approved, such courses may be offered a second time without new approval. After a second offering, they must be submitted to the Curriculum Committee for approval.

 

CHANGES IN COURSE TITLE AND DESCRIPTION:
Changes in course title and/or description without changes in the major objectives or methodologies of the courses proceed directly from the recommending Division to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval.
