UMM to Host Service Fair on Jan. 20

Event to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.

The University of Maine at Machias and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension will sponsor a service fair on the UMM campus in honor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. The fair will be held from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 20 in the Portside room of Kimball Hall.

The public is invited to visit the fair and find out about the great work that local agencies, groups, and businesses are doing and investigate possible service opportunities with them. There will also be a donation box to collect items to help restock the shelves of local food pantries, which are often quite bare after the holiday rush.

The service fair is one of hundreds of activities that states and cities are organizing to honor the legacy of Dr. King. In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, directing the King Center and the Corporation for National and Community Service to carry out a day of service reflecting Dr. King's life and teachings. The King Day of Service brings together people who might not ordinarily meet, breaks down barriers that have divided us in the past, leads to better understanding and ongoing relationships, and is an opportunity to recruit new volunteers for your ongoing work.
