GPS to GIS Collecting GPS Data

Back to GPS to GIS Menu

Here are a few hints for collecting GPS data:

  • Take some time to glance at your data sheets while you are doing this exercise. If a GPS unit is not initialized properly, or if you are not paying attention to accuracy, you may collect some erroneous readings. Are all your recorded positions in the right hemisphere? Is there one reading that is very very different from all the others?

  • Remember to collect data in the order it is to appear on the map.

  • Remember to stand in position for 30 seconds or more to increase the accuracy of your data.
  • Tree cover or proximity to buildings may interfere with the satellite signal and lead to inaccurate data.

  • Respect private property and the privacy of individuals.

  • Have fun!
